Celebrating Local Success

The Council would like to congratulate these local businesses/organisations/people that have recently achieved National awards and/or recognition.
Our congratulations go out to all of them.

ABERTILLERY YOUTH DRAMA AND MUSICAL SOCIETY (AYDMS) JUNIOR SECTION for their outstanding performance of The Little Mermaid in Summer 2019.

ABERTILLERY YOUTH DRAMA AND MUSICAL SOCIETY (AYDMS) which in 2019 won Best Musical (Rent), Best Youth Musical (Cats), Best Performer and Best Supporting Performer at the National NOVA awards. AYDMS are very successfully representing young people of the local area on the national stage and putting Abertillery and the local area back on the map.

ABERTILLERY YOUTH Rugby Football Club for their fantastic achievements in the 2018/19 season, including winning the Dragons Youth Plate Cup Final 2019.

ABERTILLERY BLUEBIRDS Football Club for their excellent results in the 2018/19 season, culminating in becoming Champions of Gwent County Division 1 in 2019 and winning promotion to the Welsh League.

MARK WILLIAMS, World Snooker Champion 2018 and recipient of the Freedom of the Borough of Blaenau Gwent in March 2019.

BETHANY PAULL of the Valleys Gymnastics Academy, who won three gold medals and two silver medals in Level Three Artistics Gymnastics at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi in March 2019.

ABERTILLERY EXCELSIORS AFC
who came a very close second in the Gwent County Division 2 in April 2019 and will be playing next season in Gwent County Division 1.

JACK MARSHMAN who won yet another UFC fight in London on 16 March 2019, in the so called "Battle of Wales", against John Phillips of Swansea.

FRIENDS OF SIX BELLS PARK for further successes in 2019, improving the park and facilities for local people, including the re-opening of the kiosk and Easter events.

ABERTILLERY BLUEBIRDS AFC who won the Gwent Seniors Cup Final on 12 May 2018 by 5 goals to 1, followed by the Gwent Cup on 19 May 2018 by 3 goals to 1.

NIA ROLES in being placed 2nd in a round of Young Musician of the Year, held at Builth Wells in 2017.

LINZI EDWARDS in winning a MuayThai/Thai Boxing World Title in 2017 at the 55 kg weight and a Thai Rules 59 kg European title.

JAMIE HUGHES for his continuing success in Jiu Jitsu and for becoming the second youngest Welsh person ever to receive a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt.

JACK SHORE for remaining undefeated in both the professional and amateur Mixed Martial Arts area. His next fight is on March 24th 2018 and will be televised.

FFRINDIAU TYLERI for their hard work and efforts with Winterfest.

ABERTILLERY AMATEUR DRAMATIC AND MUSICAL SOCIETY for their 2018 production of Cinderella.

ABERTILLERY YOUTH DRAMA AND MUSICAL SOCIETY for their recent sell-out shows.

NEIL MILKINS for his recent BBC documentary and Performance at the Met which helps to promote Abertillery

CHRIS HILL for his success at the 2017 Over 50's World Tennis Championship in Miami.

IEUAN AND ROBERT TAYLOR of Devil’s Martial Arts, who in 2017 travelled to the World Martial Arts Championships in Switzerland along with 8 other members of their club, which was based at Pen-y-Fan Industrial Estate in Oakdale, entered 3 sections and won 5 World Titles and 1 Bronze medal between them

ABERTILLERY YOUTH DRAMA AND MUSICAL SOCIETY: for their outstanding production of Rock of Ages.

ROSS EDWARDS for his work in maintaining the Town Centre Toilets which were recognised by another Town Council as being "First Class".

BETHANY PAUL for her achievement in the Special Olympics in August 2017.

JOSH WILSHER in winning the Monmouthshire Under 25s Bowls Championship and being Runner Up in the Welsh Bowls Championship in 2017.

ABERTILLERY TOWN BAND in coming third in the UK National Brass Band Championships, which was the best result for any Welsh Band in 2017.

FRIENDS OF SIX BELLS PARK are doing outstanding work to redevelop the park, install new equipment and strive for further improvement of the park facilities, for the benefit of local people.

 

CHARLES SARGENT: Mr Sargent served with the Bomber Command during WWII. He received the Distinguished Flying Medal in 1945. In May 2017 he was appointed to the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre national de la Legion d'honneur for his "steadfast involvement in the Liberation of France during the Second World War"

JACK MARSHMAN: Jack has recently been successful in his 3rd UFC (Mixed Martial Arts) fight on 16 July in Glasgow Scotland. Jack is a member of the Tillery Combat MMA Academy. His current record stands at 3 fights and 2 wins in the UFC, and he was previously the middleweight Cage Warriors Fighting Championship champion.

ABERTILLERY ORPHEUS MALE VOICE CHOIR: The choir represented both Wales and Abertillery at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in France during the 3 -13 August 2017; the only Welsh choir to appear at this prestigious international musical festival.

ZION MINERS CHAPEL: They have won a National Award from Congregational Federation for their work within the community, specifically for their work with Dementia Friendly, Living Alone Group and their Intergenerational Craft Group.

CHURCH STREET FISH BAR: This is one of only 7 takeway shops within Wales to be included in the top 50 list of takeaways within the UK as awarded by Fryer the industry standard magazine. They have also achieved the Fish and Chips quality standard, and is the only Fish and Chip shop in Blaeanu Gwent to be given that accolade.

STUDIO K HAIR SALON: They have won the 2017 Welsh Hair and Beauty Awards, Hair Salon of the Year.

ABERTILLERY TOWN BAND: Winning first place in the second section at the Welsh National Band Championships, Winning the award for Best Percussion. Also individual congratulations to Andrew Thomas for winning Best Instrumentalist.

SIX BELLS TENNIS CLUB AND CHRIS HILL: Welsh Lawn Tennis Association Park of the Year and Chris Hill for winning the Presidential Award
